The US routinely uses torture in all types of detention settings: prisons, immigration detention, police custody, juvenile detention. And also outside detention in Cointelpro-style severe harassment, cruel and inhumane treatment, “disruption”, corrosion, state-sponsored violence, human rights abuse.
According to torture medical expert Dr. M. Besoglu, torture scientifically is four things: a) isolation and rupture of social bonds b) inescapable pain and suffering c) incomprehensibility d) unpredictability. https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2017-43722-002
The US taught torture to police and militaries for decades at the School of the Americas. US KUBARK torture features methods that leave little forensic evidence but create severe PTSD, and allow for the torturers to “capture the pathways to consciousness” and establish control over the victim. This torture includes sleep deprivation, sensory deprivation (isolation, wrapping, hooding) and overload (loud noise, light, smells), cruel treatment as a base. Also threats against family, death threats and simulation like waterboarding, stress positions, slapping, beating, depredation-( bad smells, food, air, water, cold/heat), medical maltreatment, sensorium altering drugs like LSD, opiates…https://soaw.org/soa-manuals
The US uses these methods extensively in the forever “war on terror” in Iraq and Afghanistan, at Gitmo against suspects- but also at home in prisons, immigration detention like orphaned legal asylum seeking children, in police ex ante “crime prevention”, and US Intel warfare against “possible threats” like blacks.
